Police stopped on Rose Park after seeing a man wearing a sweatshirt with the hood on and tied tightly around his face, Capt. Richard Conklin said. The suspect, Pablo Monegro, took off running and threw a gun he had in his waistband under a car before the officers caught him and arrested him, Conklin said.

The gun was a .32-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, loaded with six rounds, he said. It was not stolen, but police will run a ballistics test to see whether it was used in any crimes in the city, Conklin said.

“Kudos to those guys,” he said, referring to Sgt. Richard Gasparino as well as Officers Louis Vidal and Lou Scarano. He praised their proactive approach after seeing Monegro dressed that way in hot weather. His suspicious manner of dress could have indicated he was planning to do something wrong, Conklin said.

Police have increased patrols in the area because a number of shootings and complaints about shootings have occurred in that section of the West Side, Conklin said.

Monegro, who has been previously convicted for armed robbery, was charged with criminal possession of a pistol, interfering with officers and illegal carrying of a pistol without a permit, Conklin said. He was held on $150,000 bond and will be arraigned Friday, he said.
