Police: Ex-Convict Caught With Gun In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — An ex-convict was charged with illegally carrying a firearm in Stamford, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

Patrol officers stopped Dayvon Kearney, 27, and two others for acting suspiciously on the city’s West Side, and had to handcuff Kearney after he became abusive and screaming at them, Shawinsky said. The officers found a fully loaded .380 automatic weapon, with its serial number filed off in his waistband, the sergeant said.

In 2011 Kearney was convicted of criminal possession of a firearm, making it illegal for him to carry a firearm, Shawinsky said.

He was charged with criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, illegal carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal alteration to a pistols identity, police said. Kearney was held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, but was unable to appear in court on Wednesday for medical treatment, Shawinsky said.

Police are still investigating if the weapon has been used in any of the recent shootings in the city and will be talking to Kearney about them, Shawinsky said.
