Matthew J. Baran, 24, of 199 Old Springfield Road, Charleston, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a weapon under the influence and second-degree breach of peace. He is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on June 8.

The incident began when police received a call from an individual who said he had been confronted by Baran on Selleck Street, police said.

The caller told police that Baran had approached him and said "how he hated Connecticut, and how he hated the gun laws here and they should be like the gun laws in New Hampshire," Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.

Officers searched the area and found a man matching the suspect's description standing outside a restaurant at 67 Selleck St. and staring in at it, he said.

"The officer got out of his car and at gunpoint ordered the suspect to drop his gun," Connelly said.

The man complied and then was forced down to the ground by officers, police said. A 9mm shell casing was found in his jacket front pocket, and the Springfield 9mm handgun had eight rounds in it, Connelly said.

Baran told officers his car was somewhere in the area, and officers found it in a Greenwich Avenue parking lot with a .22-caliber rifle in the trunk and ammunition in plain view on the seats and floor, Connelly said.

There was no information about what prompted Baran to be in Stamford, Connelly said.
