Greenwich Police Chief James J. Heavey warned residents of the danger posed by the car thieves, who frequently engage in other crimes in town and "generally have little regard for the safety of others."
"All of these vehicles had two things in common: They were unlocked and they had their keys in them," Heavey said in a statement Monday.
"While no one single person or group is responsible for all of the thefts, what we do know is that those involved are typically between the age of 15 and 21. They can be male or female and of any race," Heavey said.
"They often engage in other criminal activity while in Greenwich, such as burglaries and larcenies. They generally have little regard for the safety of others and will often run from police. Many have crashed stolen cars, injuring themselves and others."
Heavey asked residents to follow these tips to protect your vehicles:
- Don't leave your keys in your car.
- Close your windows and lock your doors whenever you leave your car, regardless of how long you plan to be gone.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Keep your car in a garage if you have one.
- Use an anti-theft device whenever you leave your car.
- Immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
