Norwalk Police Officers Pay Final Respects To Lt. Tim Murphy

NORWALK, Conn. — With a final salute from the officers, the chief and the mayor, the Norwalk Police Department bid farewell to retired Lt. Tim Murphy on Saturday.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Murphy at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. 

"A tremendous showing of love and respect for a great man. We miss you Murph," the department said in a Facebook post.

"Thank you New Canaan Police Department for your assistance. Thank you Connecticut State Police , Greenwich Police and Town of Westport Police Department for your assistance as well."

Mayor Harry Rilling, the former police chief, joined the officers in mourning at the church. 

Murphy, 55, died Jan. 29 at age 55 of cancer. He served as a lieutenant with the Norwalk Police Department, where he had a 33-year career.

Just days after retiring from the department last spring, Murphy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. He died last week at his home in Florida.

Murphy was born in Bronxville, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 1960, the son of John and Alice Dolan Murphy. He was raised in New Canaan, attended Trinity Pawling Prep School, was a graduate of St. Leo College, and received his master’s degree from the University of New Haven.

In addition to his 33 years of service with Norwalk Police, Murphy was also an avid hockey player and a founding member of the Norwalk Police Hockey Team. He was also an adjunct professor at Norwalk Community College and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberley Murphy; his stepdaughters Nicole and Danielle; his brothers John, David and Brian; his sisters Karen and Joanne; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his brothers in blue.

Calling hours and arrangement were handled by Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk.
