NORWALK, Conn. -- A Bridgeport man suspected of stealing a car in Middletown was tackled by a police officer in Norwalk as he tried to escape arrest, according to police.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, an officer on patrol in Norwalk saw a Nissan Maxima traveling on Water Street with significant front-end damage. Just prior to this, an evading motor vehicle accident had been reported in South Norwalk, police said. Suspecting that this was the car that had fled the scene, the officer tried to stop the Nissan on the Stroffolino Bridge.

The driver refused to pull over, and sped away before pulling to a stop in the driveway of 35 Fort Point St., police said. The driver then fled on foot, leading to a short chase. The officer tackled him to the ground, where the suspect actively resisted arrest, according to police.

Officers were able to subdue the driver and take him into custody. They located the car, which was revealed to have been stolen out of Middletown, police said.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Luis Garcia of Bridgeport, was charged with first-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, criminal impersonation, engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, operating under suspension and misuse of marker plates. His bond was set at $100,000.
