A police sergeant heard a loud grinding noise coming from a car driving on Westport Avenue at around 1:30 a.m., and saw that the front and rear passenger-side tires were gone, according to the Hour. The car was driving on its rims, and the sergeant pulled it over, the Hour reported.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old Paul Sayegh of Norwalk, smelled of alcohol and said he might have hit a tree, according to the Hour. He failed a field sobriety test and was arrested, the Hour reported.

Police later found debris from tires near the intersection of East Avenue and Wall Street, where it appeared a small tree had been hit, according to the Hour.

Sayegh was charged with operating under the influence, evading responsibility with property damage, failure to maintain a proper lane, failure to carry registration or insurance card, and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, the Hour reported.

Sayegh had previously been arrested on drunken driving charges in New Canaan in January after police reported that he tried to pick up a child at a school while intoxicated, according to the Hour.
