At 11:30 a.m. Friday, officers responded to the scene, where a 1-year-old had been locked in a BMW for about 10 minutes.

Patrol Officer Jeremy Salley saw a 1-year-old girl who was red faced and sweaty inside the car.

Realizing the child was in distress, Salley used a spring-loaded window punch to break out the driver’s window, police said.

He then crawled through the broken window because the BMW’s security system would not allow the doors to be opened, police said.

He got the baby out of the car. Norwalk EMS evaluated and medically cleared the child at the scene, police said.

The investigation found that the child had been playing with the keys and had accidentally locked herself in the car, police said. The child’s caretaker had immediately called police.

Chief Tom Kulhawik commended Salley.

“Officer Salley’s quick thinking and calculated actions kept the child safe from harm,” he said.
