At around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, an officer saw a 2001 Chevy Blazer driving east on the Post Road, and the passenger did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, police said. A check of the license plate showed that it belonged to a 1991 Ford Mustang. After the car pulled abruptly into a gas station, it was stopped by the officer.

The officer spoke with the driver, identified as 51-year-old Erick Locklear of Maston, N.C. Locklear told the officer that he did not have a driver's license, and that the car belonged to his girlfriend, who was not in the car, police said. The officer then noticed a pill bottle lying on the back seat, with the label scratched off and a number of pills inside, police said.

K9 Kenny was called in and walked around the car to conduct a free-air sniff, and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics, according to police. Officers searched the car and found several pills and a straw with white powder residue inside, police said. They also found a glass pipe with marijuana residue on it, according to police.

When asked about the pills, the passenger, identified as 50-year-old Steven Oxendine of Rowland, N.C., said that they belonged to him, according to police. He was unable to produce any prescriptions, police said. No one took ownership of the straw, the residue on which tested positive for heroin, according to police.

The two were placed under arrest. At headquarters, police identified the pills as two Hydralazine, two Clonazepam, one Furosemide, and five Oxycodone.

Locklear was charged with improper use of a marker plate, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He posted a $150 bond and was given a court date of Aug. 1.

Oxendine was charged with possession of narcotics, illegal storage of narcotics, and possession of marijuana. He was held on a $10,000 bond and brought to court on Monday.
