Garfield Simmonds, 51, avoided going to jail after pleading guilty to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle before Judge Richard Comerford in Stamford on Thursday, said the Stamford Advocate.

The judge sentenced Simmonds to a six-month suspended sentence and a year of probation, added the Stamford Advocate.

Simmonds killed Henry Wagmeister, 57, who lived in Weston and was employed by Truck Tire Sales & Service in Stamford, when he drifted into the shoulder, struck Wagmeister's service truck and forced it into him.

Wagmeister was killed on impact, according to police. The service truck he was driving was totaled.

Landy Narcisse-Parra, 25, of Elizabeth, N.J., the driver of the disabled tractor-trailer, suffered leg pain and glass in his face from the impact, police said.

Simmonds faced a six month jail sentence if he had pleaded not guilty, added the Stamford Advocate.
