STAMFORD, Conn. — Police have not yet charged an employee of a check cashing location in Stamford with embezzling funds from the shop, Lt. Diedrich Hohn said.
An audit has to be done and other evidence needs to be collected from X Bankers before applying for a warrant, Hohn said. He was unable to give a schedule for when a warrant may come.
The incident was originally reported as a robbery, however, investigators were able to figure out that the employee had been embezzling funds from work, the lieutenant said. “His story didn’t make any sense,” Hohn said, adding that he doesn’t believe anyone came to rob the place and that it was suspicious that the security cameras weren’t working.
The suspect, 25, of Bridgeport has been cooperative with police and told investigators that he had financial problems and began to taking money from the company to back fill it later, Hohn said. The total he owed the company has reached about $70,000, the lieutenant said.
