The stores were checked by police and state officials on Oct. 20 to ensure they were not illegally selling tobacco products to minors.

But one business — A1 Cellars on Elm Street — was found to be non-compliant, police said. It was issued a first time infraction fine of $200 for illegally selling either tobacco products or e-cigarettes to minors, according to New Canaan police.

Tobacco products and e-cigarettes cannot legally be sold to anyone under the age of 18 in Connecticut, and no one under the age of 18 can be in possession of such products in public.

The compliance checks were conducted by the New Canaan police with the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.

"A supervised minor deployed by the TPEP inspection team entered retail establishments around town to conduct tobacco and electronic cigarette inspections to ensure compliance with state law," police said in a statement.

The New Canaan establishments found to be in compliance were:

  • Both Mobil Marts on the Merritt Parkway between Exits 37 and 38
  • Gulf on South Avenue
  • Mobil Mart on South Avenue
  • Walgreens on Pine Street
  • Acme Supermarket on Elm Street
  • Stewart's Spirits on Elm Street
  • Vegetable Barn & Deli on Cross Street
