The resident entered the building through a side door at 47 Liberty St. at about 11:30 p.m., police said. As he walked up the stairwell, someone grabbed his back pants pocket from behind him, police said.

He turned around and saw two black males wearing hoodies and dark clothing, police said. He noticed that one of them pulled out what appeared to be a folding knife, police said.

The man didn't resist and held up his hands, police said. The robbers grabbed his wallet, which contained about $400 in cash, and his iPhone 5 and fled, police said.

Officers traveling north on Liberty Street noticed two men wearing hoodies running from the apartment location to the area of 59 Liberty St., police said. When the two men saw the officers, they ran, police said. The officers pursued them on foot but lost them after they ran through a hole in a fence and escaped out to High Street, police said.

The victim said he didn't get a good look at the robbers' faces but said he believed they were about 18 to 20 years old, police said.

Police called in the K-9 unit but were unsuccessful in tracking down the suspects.
