STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 39-year-old man pulled a knife on a stranger for no apparent reason, then tried to elude officers by slipping into a nearby store Sunday night, Stamford Police said.

A man told officers on patrol at about 9 p.m. that a man had confronted him and pulled out a knife, police said. He then pointed out the suspect, who was standing in front of a Smith Street store, police said.

As officers approached, the man went inside and appeared to take a knife out of his pocket and drop it, police said.

As the man attempted to reach for the knife, an officer kicked it away while a second officer placed the man in handcuffs, police said.

The knife had a 4-and-a-half-inch long blade, police said.

Jaime Lopez-Contreras, 39, of Stillwater Avenue, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace.

Police had no information what prompted the incident. The victim said he had no prior contact with Lopez-Contreras, police said.
