STAMFORD, Conn. -- A police officer got elbowed in the face by an intoxicated man he was trying to help at Alive@Five on Thursday night, Stamford Police said.

A 23-year-old Fairfield man was charged in the incident, police said.

Officers working at the summer concert series were responding to a call by the stage when they noticed bouncers escorting a man out of Bobby V's Restaurant and Sports Bar at about 9 p.m., police said.

After the man fell to the ground, officers went over to ensure he was OK and to take him to a safer area away from the crowd.

However, police said Rory Phelan Kelly, 23, of 74 Millspaugh Drive. Fairfield, didn't appreciate the officers' concern. He alleged elbowed one officer in the face, causing him to later be treated and released from Stamford Hospital, police said. Kelly also verbally profanely abused officers and demanded they remove his handcuffs so that he could fight them, according to police.

Kelly was charged with interfering with an officer, second-degree hindering prosecution and second-degree breach of peace.

He was held on $2,500 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned in court Friday morning.

There was no information on the original incident by the stage.
