STAMFORD, Conn. -- In a disturbing case of police impersonation, an Enfield man claiming to be an undercover police officer was just about to search a 22-year-old woman early Sunday morning in downtown Stamford when he was interrupted by her father who drove upon the scene, police said.
John William King, 45, of 22 King Court, was charged with impersonation of a police officer, second-degree failure to appear and second-degree unlawful restraint.
The 22-year-old woman was searching for her car shortly before 5 a.m. in the downtown area when she remembered it was in the Bell Street parking garage, police said. As she walked over to it, she noticed a bald-headed man wearing basketball shorts who approached her and told her he was an undercover cop, police said.
At one point, she flagged down a taxicab, police said. But King wouldn't let her get in, told the taxicab driver he was a police officer and told the driver to leave, police said.
King had pulled out his wallet and showed the woman identification leading her to believe he was an undercover officer, Stamford Police said.
"She told the officers that she really felt she couldn't leave," said Sgt. Kelly Connelly. "She felt he was an officer and answered all his questions and complied with everything he asked her."
King asked her to see identification, and she showed him her driver's license. He said he would search her for drugs or weapons when her father arrived on the scene, police said.
King left the area with the father following, and police were called. A security officer nearby told officers he saw a man walk into the construction area near the Majestic Theatre, police said. Officers discovered the man in a portable toilet, police said. After a conversation, he came out and was arrested.
Bond was set at $25,000 for King.
