Kadeem Sadio, 28, was arrested and charged with numerous motor vehicle violations around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, after he backed into another vehicle in the area of Mission Street and then attempted to leave the scene of the accident without exchanging information, causing the other driver to confront him, Stamford Police said.

When the driver confronted Sadio, he got out of his vehicle and began punching the other operator in the face multiple times, police said.

Good Samaritans then stepped in and separated the two.

As Sadio attempted to enter the vehicle again to leave, the victimized operator yanked the rear license plate off the vehicle. Sadio then retrieved a shovel from a nearby parked pick-up truck and hit the other driver in the back of the head with the shovel, causing a laceration and bleeding, police said.

Sadio then reentered the rental vehicle he was driving and fled the scene with the victim still in possession of the license plate and suffering from his wounds.

The vast majority of the incident was captured on video by a neighboring witness who recorded it with a mobile phone. Sadio, who has had past encounters with the Stamford Police Department, was immediately recognized on the video by several investigating officers, police said.

A short time after the encounter, while checking the area for Sadio, Patrol Officer Stephane Smarth, observed Sadio's vehicle traveling toward him on Merrell Avenue. The vehicle swerved into the oncoming lane and accelerated, narrowly missing Smarth's vehicle, and then cut back over just before hitting the patrol car, police added.

The vehicle became trapped in traffic allowing Smarth to apprehend Sadio.

He was charged with evading responsibility, violating the conditions of a Learner's Permit, and reckless operation. He was also charged with the criminal violations of assault and Interfering with a police investigation.

Sadio, who has prior convictions for a weapons violation, probation violation, and robbery, remains in the custody of the Stamford Police on a $75,000 bond to await arraignment in court.

The victim remains hospitalized at the time of this release.
