Raymond Roy Iriarte, of 20 North St., was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace after confronting a driver at 9:14 a.m. in the parking lot for Liz-Sue Bagels and Coalhouse Pizza, among others, police said.

The 42-year-old victim was attempting to back out of a parking spot when a 2014 black four-door Lincoln MKS attempted to drive by but was blocked by the 42-year-old's car, police said. Angered by the victim's driving, Iriarte got out of his vehicle and approached the younger man, police said.

As the 42-year-old man was getting out of his vehicle, Iriarte struck him on the side of the head, said Sgt. Kelly Connelly, who said the fisticuffs continued.

"When he got out, he was hit on the other side of the head, knocking him down to the ground," Connelly said.

Determined to keep Iriarte from driving away, the victim stood in front of the MKS, police said. However, Iriarte put his foot on the gas pedal and the younger man jumped on the hood of the vehicle to avoid being hit, Connelly said.

Officers arrived and Iriarte told them he had been defending himself when he struck the younger man, because the younger man had assumed a fighting position and raised his fists, police said.

However, that was contradicted by an eyewitness, who told police that Iriarte was the aggressor, Connelly said.

His bond was set at $500.
