The event took place around 8 p.m. Saturday about 100 yards offshore of Woodway Beach Club, when lifeguard Morgan Carson of New Canaan saw what he thought was three men struggling in the water just off the point, said Stamford Police Sgt. Kevin Fitzgibbons.

"He grabbed his rescue kayak and headed into the water to rescue the men," Fitzgibbons.

When Carson reached the men they all had on life jackets but were intoxicated, so he helped them back to the beach, Fitzgibbons said.

Fitzgibbons said it was a good call on Carson's behalf because you never know when a person might really need help.

He added that Carson was just finishing up a long day at work and did a good job getting the men back to shore.

Fitzgibbons said the men had been drinking but were not inebriated. No one injured.
