STAMFORD, Conn. — A gas leak was found in a Stamford dry cleaners on Hope Street at about 11 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief Tim Conroy said.
The leak was found after the dry cleaners reported a “natural gas smell,” Conroy said. The leak was on the main line going into the cellar of the cleaners and it was at a very high level, he said.
Yankee Gas was on scene and working on the main line right outside of Discount Dry Clean at the time of the leak, Conroy said. He did not say if the work being done had any impact on the cause of the leak.
The fire department did evacuate at least one building near the cleaners because a small level of gas was also found in its basement, Conroy said. He expected residents to be let back in “soon” and for fire crews to clear the area by 1:30 p.m.
Stamford Police had blocked Hope Street from Bennett Street to Northill Street while crews from Yankee Gas fixed the leak.
