William Smith, 62, of Stamford was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs Monday afternoon in an investigation stemming from a motor vehicle accident on July 18, police said in a news release. The incident took place on Dunn Avenue, down the street from Smith’s residence, the release said.

Assistant Police Chief Tim Shaw declined comment, saying police will defer to the Fire Department on the issue.

Smith resigned Friday, a news release from Mayor Michael Pavia’s office said.

“This is a clear message to all employees of the City of Stamford, regardless of whether or not you are a 35 year veteran with an exemplary service record, as is the case with Assistant Chief Smith, the City will not tolerate this type of behavior,” Pavia's release said.
