The fire department received an automatic fire alarm from the Barcelona Restaurant & Wine Bar at 18 W. Putnam Ave. at 5:11 a.m., Greenwich Fire Marshal Shawn McDonnell said at the scene.

When firefighters arrived, they couldn’t see through the windows due to heavy smoke. The bulk of the fire was knocked down by 5:38 a.m., and the fire was under control by 6:28 a.m., McDonnell said.

McDonnell said officials were still investigating the cause of the fire mid-morning. “At this point, we believe we have an area of origin, but I don’t have a cause,” he said.

The building had not been occupied for a few hours before the fire broke out, McDonnell said. “It doesn’t appear that it has anything to do with any cooking,” he said.

The building sustained smoke and heat damage, he said. Firefighters ultimately broke the front glass windows while battling the blaze.

McDonnell praised the efforts of the firefighters who responded to the scene.

“They did a good job,” he said. “When they went in through the front door, [they] got tables and chairs — the normal restaurant — so it was a bit of maze working their way in there. And then they got back got to the scene of the fire and knocked it down.”

The fire did not spread to nearby businesses. And the damage in an office above the restaurant could most likely be restored in a short amount of time, McDonnell said.

Restoration crews were already on the scene Thursday morning. A ServPro van was parked a few spaces down from the restaurant on West Putnam Avenue.

Barcelona has locations in six locations in Connecticut, including Stamford, Norwalk and Fairfield. The restaurant also has locations in Georgia, Massachusetts and the Washington, D.C., area, according to its website.
