The two-alarm fire at 298 Saugatuck Ave. was first reported at 2:23 p.m., Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Gootman said.

The initial response was four engine companies, one ladder truck and Car 3 from Westport (shift commander) and a Norwalk fire engine.

Engine 4 arrived within two minutes and found smoke and fire coming from the roof, Gootman said. Car 3 requested an additional truck company from Norwalk.

Companies initiated an interior attack on the fire and began searching the home for residents, he said, but no occupants were found. A family cat was missing but was located unharmed after the fire was extinguished.

Within a few minutes, the fire had spread through the roof and second floor, Gootman said.

The Fairfield Fire Department was requested to respond with an Engine Company and Shift Commander.

Multiple hose lines were put in service. The companies were withdrawn from the building, and firefighters went to work outside the home on defensive operations, Gootman said.

Companies re-entered the building after conditions were improved, he said. The fire was completely extinguished at 4:44 p.m.

The cause of the fire was undetermined and still under investigation by the fire marshal's office.

Additional units on scene included a second Fairfield Engine Company; an Engine Company and chief from Weston; and an Air Supply Unit from Stamford.

The Wilton Fire Department was called to cover fire headquarters.

Westport Police were called to help with traffic and crowd control while the fire was extinguished. Westport EMS provided medical evaluation for the residents and provided rehabilitation for firefighters.

The Red Cross was called to assist and provide aid to the residents.
