The incident started shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, when an employee at Cumberland Farms called police to report a woman who was swaying and slurring her speech attempting to talk to patrons before leaving the Kings Highway East store, police said.
The employee described the car the woman, later identified as Luise Carroll, 56, of Brookside Lane, Pawcatuck, got in and officers spotted it entering I-95 northbound, police said. Officers followed and watched the car swerve over the dotted line several times, police said.
When pulled over, Carroll failed field sobriety tests and was argumentative, police said. She was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
During their investigation, officers learned that Carroll and her passenger, Bryan Sauer, 56, of Whitmore Lane, Stamford, had protective orders against each other that stipulated they could not be together if either was consuming alcohol, police said.
Carroll and Sauer were each charged with violation of a protective order and held on $1,000. Both were scheduled to appear in court Sept. 25 and Carroll has a separate court date for the DUI charge on Oct.10.
