Cops: Phony Contractors Scam $2,000 From Elderly Stamford Woman

STAMFORD, Conn., -- Two conmen posing as contractors stole $2,000 from an elderly Glenbrook woman as one enticed her outside the home to look at her fence while the second went inside and grabbed the cash in a burglary late Wednesday afternoon, Stamford police said.

The 70-year-old woman woman said a Hispanic man with a short goatee about 5-foot-four came to her Boxwood Drive home around 4 p.m. and said he wanted to take down part of her fence so he could do some work on a neighbor's yard, police said.

The woman refused, and the man said he would call his "supervisor," said Sgt. Kelly Connelly. The second man - the so-called supervisor - who was slightly older with a longer goatee -- arrived, police said. He worked out a deal with the woman that he would pay her $50 and replace the fence they wanted to take down.

The first man asked to use the bathroom and the "supervisor" asked the woman to come outside so he could take measurements, police said. While she was outside, the first man found $2,000 and quickly left the residence and drove away, police said.

The phony supervisor said he had to go into his truck to write her a receipt for $50 but drove away as soon as he got inside his truck, police said.

The woman discovered the missing money shortly after and called police just before 5 p.m.
