Connecticut State's Attorney: Police Can't Stop Owners Openly Carrying Guns

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — While comparing openly carrying a firearm to driving a car, the Connecticut state's attorney has informed police departments that merely observing someone carrying a gun is not enough cause to stop them, according to the HAN Network.

The opinion, expressed in a memo obtained by the HAN Network, says that openly carrying a gun is legal in the state for those with the proper permit. But that the act of openly carrying a gun without any indication of committing a crime is not grounds enough for officers to demand that a permit be produced, according to the HAN Network.

But the state's attorney also says that officers may search someone openly carrying a gun if the disorderly conduct law is applicable to the situation, according to the HAN Network.

The memo, issued by the office of Connecticut State's Attorney Kevin T. Kane, was distributed after multiple complaints were made about the open carry law and its impact at local grocery stores, according to the HAN Network.
