Police aren't sure who was watching a 5-year-old boy seen by a passing motorist on Soundview Avenue climbing out a second-floor window and hopping onto the roof to play.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said police received the call around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, but by the time they arrived the child was back inside the home.

The caller, who was concerned the child might fall,  told police the boy was going in and out the window and onto a roof to play, Shawinsky said.

Responding officers met with the child and his grandmother who at first said she was watching him through a translator, but then said someone else who had gone to work was watching the child, he added.

"The language barrier made it difficult to find out who was really watching the child," he said.

Officers told the grandmother to secure the window so the child would not get out again.

While inside the home, officers also noticed several padlocked doors, leading them to believe illegal room rentals might be taking place at the home.

Officers took a report and forwarded the information to the city's health department for inspection, Shawinsky said.
