16-Year Old Arrested By Stamford Cops On Charges Of Dealing Heroin

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 16-year-old was arrested Tuesday evening with nearly $4,700 in heroin packaged for sale in what a senior Stamford Police officer said was a disturbing example of the amount of heroin available and the ages of those involved in dealing it.

"One, it illustrates the amount of heroin we are seeing out there. And two, it also shows how our youth are involved in these things," Capt. Richard Conklin said Wednesday.

Officers undertook what Conklin called a lengthy investigation into the teen after receiving information that he was selling heroin. He said officers have had dealings with the teen in the past.

Officers arrested the teen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while he was with a group hanging out on Ludlow Street, Conklin said. Officers found 7.2 grams of marijuana in his possession, Conklin said. When officers executed a search warrant at his Custer Street area residence, they found 234 bags of heroin packaged and ready for sale, Conklin said. The bags generally sell for $20 each.

"That's a tremendous amount of heroin for a 16-year-old to be involved (with)," Conklin said. "It's a very ominous sign when you have a 16-year-old in possession of this large quantity of heroin. It illustrates the heroin problem that we are seeing regionally and also is troubling that a youth would have that much."

The bags were stamped with one of four brand names: Wait For Me, Diesel, Good Work and Ben Gay, Conklin said. Officers also seized a digital scale and $805 in cash, he said.

A woman who identified herself as the teen's aunt was at the residence but was uncooperative with officers, Conklin said.

The teen is facing charges of possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of marijuana, operating a drug factory and possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of public housing and was remanded into juvenile custody without bond, Conklin said.

The teen's name was not released by police because of his age.
