STAMFORD, Conn., -- Don't ever mess with a crime scene even if you want to repair your damaged home.
Police were stymied in getting information in a home burglary that netted the thief a $15,000 watch after a homeowner repaired a damaged doorframe before police arrived to check for evidence Thursday afternoon.
Police said a woman returned to her West Avenue home Thursday afternoon to find her front door open, its frame damaged and the lock mechanism broken. She discovered the only item missing was the gold and silver "Conco" watch, Sgt. Simon Blanc said.
Before police arrived her husband had repaired the frame that left the police identification unit unable to collect any evidence.
"There was no scene to process because the husband had done some work on the door frame to repair it," Blanc said.
