STAMFORD, Conn. — A 15-year-old boy was apprehended after he tried to rob another man at gunpoint in broad daylight Friday afternoon in downtown Stamford, police said.

At 12:21 p.m. Friday, Stamford officers responded to Summer Street near Spring Street on report of an attempted armed robbery, said police Lt. Michael A. Noto.

The would-be 22-year-old victim, a Stamford resident, ran when he saw the gun, Noto said.

Stamford Police Officers, led by Sgt. Adrian Novia, saturated the downtown area in search of the armed suspect, he said.

The victim provided police with a description of the suspect, and Stamford officers were able to determine the identity and address of the 15 year old suspect, Noto said.

Officers found the handgun and other evidence at his residence, he said.

The 15-year-old suspect was found shortly thereafter, walking downtown, Noto said.

Officer Brendetta Baines took him into custody with help from Officers Logan Pavia and Timothy Inverno, who were working extra-duty jobs in the area, he said.

The juvenile suspect was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with criminal attempt at robbery, carrying a pistol without a permit, threatening and breach of peace.

The officers "did a magnificent job in taking a violent juvenile off the streets as well as a gun," Noto said.

"The Stamford Police Department is very concerned with the proliferation of illegal weapons on the streets as we known the citizens of this city are as well," he said. "We are grateful to these officers for taking yet another dangerous weapon off the streets."
