Winnifred M. Chorotas, 87, Of Stamford, Nurse And Artist

STAMFORD, Conn. - Winnifred M. Chorotas, of Stamford, died March 6. She was 87.

Chorotas was born April 23, 1926, at the Cove Mills area of Stamford, a daughter of Thomas and Harriet Benham. She attended school in Stamford and graduated from Stamford High School in 1944. She attended the nursing school at Stamford Hospital and worked as an LPN. She was married to John Chorotas of Stamford.

Chorotas was also a painter and a sculptor. One of her works is part of the tile display in the Cove Mills museum at Cove Island Park, depicting her grandfather waiting for a ship to arrive at Cove Harbor where he was a harbor pilot.

Chorotas is survived by her children, Thomas (Jacqueline) Griffith of East Haven, Sandra (Drue) Martineau of New Port Richey, Fla., and Holly (William) Dick of Norwalk; a sister, Helena Ann Starkey (John) of Norwalk; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank S. Griffith.

Calling hours and a prayer service will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. Interment will be Thursday, March 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.

Donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Winnifred Chorotas’ name.
