William L. Zaccagnino, 92, Of Stamford, Retired U.S. Postal Employee

STAMFORD, Conn. - William L. Zaccagnino of Stamford died Friday, March 7. He was 92.

Zaccagnino was born Oct. 30, 1921, he was son of Bill “Vito” and Jennie Telesca Zaccagnino. He was a graduate of Stamford High School, class of ‘39, and attended St. Basil’s Prep in Stamford for one year after that. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1942 where he served as a radio operator and instructor. He began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Stamford in 1946 at the Main Post Office on Atlantic Street, moved to the Glenbrook Sub-Station and returned to the main office where he stayed for 34 years, retiring in 1980 as the chief accountant and director of Finance. He then went to work for lifelong friends, Bob and Frank Rich, in the accounting department of the F.D.Rich Co. for the next 10 years.

Zaccagnino was a member of the Italian Center and Men’s Club as well as serving on the Board of Trustees of King School. He moved to Naples, Fla., in 1990 where he resided at and was a member of the Countryside Golf and Country Club. He served on many committees there including finance, house, architectural, grounds and was president and member of the Board of Directors of his building.

Zaccagnino is survived by his son, Peter Zaccagnino (Laurie Taft) of Norwalk; two grandchildren; a cousin; nieces, nephews; grand nieces and grand nephews; and other members of the Battinelli and Ritchie family. He was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Ann Battinelli Zaccagnino.

Calling hours are Tuesday, March 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home Wednesday, March 12 at 9:15 a.m. and proceed to St. Maurice Parish, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
