COS COB, Conn. - Walter X. Burns Jr., a lifelong resident of the Cos Cob neighborhood in Greenwich, died Wednesday, Feb. 12. He was 72.
Burns was born Aug. 23, 1941, to Walter X. Burns Sr. and Margaret Mitchell Burns. He attended St. Catherine's and Iona Prep, then graduated from Amherst College in 1963.
He spent his career on Wall Street and served a term on the Representative Town Meeting of Greenwich.
Burns was part of the team that opened and ran Tracks, a popular Old Greenwich bar and restaurant, and Applause Restaurant in Stamford. He was a member of Riverside Yacht Club for more than 35 years, and was also a member of Cos Cob Yacht Club, Mianus River Boat & Yacht Club, and the Ponus Yacht Club. At Riverside, he organized and coached the Special Olympics sailing program for more than 10 years.
Burns is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Christopher (Emily) and Michael (Laurie) of Marina del Rey, Calif.; daughter, Siobhan and her partner, Ralph Sutton of New York City; brother, Kevin of Cos Cob; sister, Mary Louise Brown of Greenwich; and nephews and nieces.
A memorial service with reception to follow will be held at Riverside Yacht Club on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Burns’ honor to the Special Olympics (specialolympics.org).
