Theodoros Athanasoulias, 75, Of Stamford, Former Restaurant Owner

STAMFORD, Conn. - Theodoros Athanasoulias, 75, of Stamford, died Sunday, May 17, after a battle with cancer.

He was born May 22, 1939, in Platana, Sparta, Greece, to the late John and Yiannoula Stratigakis Athanasoulias.

He served as a lieutenant in the Greek army

Athanasoulias worked at Excelsior Hardware in Stamford for 20 years.

He, along with his brother and business partner, opened their Village Pizza restaurant in Madison and operated the eatery until he retired in 2007.

He was one of the founders of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and served many years on the parish council.

Athanasoulias was a Greek language teacher, as well as a member of the Panhellenic Athletic Club.

Survivors include his wife, Libby Screpetis Athanasoulias; one daughter, Jenny (Kurt) Bachman of Stamford; one son, John (Connie) Athanasoulias of Stamford; one brother, Efstratios (Venetia) Athanasoulias of Stamford; one sister, Maria Tzanetakis of Greece; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

A Trisagian service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Ave., Stamford.

Interment will follow in the Fairfield Memorial Park, 230 Oaklawn Ave., Stamford.
