STAMFORD, Conn. – Thelma Ruth Carey, 98, of Stamford, died Tuesday, April 7.

She was born July 15, 1916, in Wilmington, Del., to the late Frank and Christianna Hoffman.

Carey graduated from Frankford Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. She served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Fort Belvoir, Va., during World War II.

After her military service, she worked for many years at Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia as a registered nurse.

She lived in Stamford for more than 20 years and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Christine C. Carey; one son, Walter (Mary Lou) Carey; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband, Lawrence Matthew Carey; one son, Lawrence Carey; one daughter-in-law, Linda Carey; two brothers, George and Herbert; and two sisters, Grace and Dorothy, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 628 Main St., Stamford.
