“Syd” was born Jan. 2, 1930, in New York City where she attended the High School of Music and Art. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology and Design, she worked briefly in the fashion industry and then married Jerome Hertz.

She moved to Stamford in 1958, and quickly became active in the community. While her children were growing, she joined the Sisterhood and Hadassah through Congregation Agudath Shalom and delighted in applying her artistic talents to the design of the Temple's prayer books and decorations for community events. She enjoyed learning new techniques through art classes at the Stamford Museum. Her participation in local exhibitions established her reputation in the local arts community.

In the 1970s, she opened a children's boutique store, Syd's Corner, in Greenwich for five years. Her wide personal networks encouraged her to become a real estate broker. She retired and moved to the Darien Atria in 2011, where she used her apartment as a live-in studio. She showcased newly acquired oil painting techniques in several solo exhibits in recent years.

She is survived by her children Rosanna Hertz and Robert J. Thomas, Nadine Hertz Rosenzweig and Beth and Jerry Cooper; and seven grandchildren, Marlene and Emma Rosenzweig, Bryan, Eric, Renee and Sam Cooper and Alyssa Thomas.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jerome Hertz; and her son-in-law, Greg Rosenzweig.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Congregation Agudath Sholom, 301 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford. After the burial service, friends and family will be received at the home of Beth and Jerry Cooper in Stamford until 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in her honor to the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, c/o Alumni and Friends of LaGuardia High School, Art Angel Fund-Sydell Hertz, 100 Amsterdam Ave., Room 853, New York, NY 10023.
