Sister Fernanda Scarlato, Posc, 85, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. - Sister Fernanda (nee’ Rosina) Scarlato, POSC, a member of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts, died June 24. She was 85.

Sister Fernanda was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Savelli (Cosenza), Italy, daughter of Francesco and Victoria (Rotundo) Scarlato. She served as a religious worker for 65 years. In October 1948 along with eight other Sisters, she left Calabria at the age of 21 to establish a new apostolic mission in the United States. They came to Stamford with little in the way of material goods but well-grounded by their charisma and commitment. She was assigned to Saint Basil’s Preparatory School as well as the Chancery of the Bishop of the Ukrainian Diocese of Stamford. From 1962 to 1998, she taught kindergarten at Our Lady of Grace School and during this time, also served as convent superior. From 1998 to 2007, she served as superior of Villa Divino Amore Convent. She remained a member of the VDA community until her passing.

Sister Fernanda was instrumental in establishing two educational institutions in Stamford – Our Lady of Grace Nursery School and Kindergarten in 1962 and Villa Divino Amore Nursery School in 1989.

Sister Fernanda is survived by her sisters, Giuseppina and Maria; brothers, Raffaele and Franco; and numerous nieces and nephews in Italy and Argentina.

Calling hours are from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29 at Saint Maurice Roman Catholic Church, 358 Glenbrook Road in Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Entombment will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Darien.
