WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Sally Pappas Perna, a resident of West Haven, and formerly of Stamford, died Saturday, Oct. 12. She was 81.
Perna was born May 13, 1932, in Stamford, to Achilles and Bertha (Adams) Pappas. She was born and raised in Stamford before moving to reside in Bridgeport, Fairfield and finally, West Haven. She was the first female police officer hired for the Fairfield Police Department, where she served for 20 plus years. She also served as a bodyguard for President Ronald Reagan on many of his visits to the Fairfield County area during his presidency. She was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Bridgeport where she served in the Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Sisters of Penelope.
Perna is survived by her daughter, Michele Grabowiecki; son, Louis (Yolanda) Perna; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brother, Tony (Barbara) Pappas; sisters, Joan Bolanis and Helen Coker; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and brothers, Charles and Roger Pappas.
Calling hours are Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902. A funeral service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 1230 Newfield Ave., in Stamford, Rev. Fr. Evangelos Evangelidis will officiate. Interment will immediately follow at Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place, in Stamford.
