Rose Mallozzi, 93, Longtime Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. – Rose Rumore Mallozzi, a longtime Stamford resident, died Nov. 27 in McLean, Va. She was 93.

Mallozzi was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Frank Paul and Josephine Licari Rumore. Her parents moved to Stamford when she was 3. Her father founded The Stamford Coal and Supply Company in 1922.

She graduated from Stamford High School in 1937 and attended the New York School of Interior Design. A seamstress, she taught sewing at the Singer Sewing Company and the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford. During World War II, she participated in the war effort by sewing American flags.

Mallozzi worked at Conde Nast in Stamford and at Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company. For many years, she also worked in her father’s heating business, now known as Reliable Oil & Heat Company, which is still family-owned and operated.

She traveled across the U.S. with her husband and cared for elderly members of her family. A lifelong reader, Mallozzi volunteered with the elderly, often reading to them. Mallozzi moved to Virginia in 2002 to be near her daughter and lived at Avalon Assisted Living in McLean.

She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Rosario Mallozzi; a sister, Providence Rumore; and a brother, Roy W. Rumore Sr. She is survived by a brother, Joseph W. Rumore, of Parkland, Fla.; a daughter, Lauraine Matchneer, of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Frank Paul Coughlin, of Cavendish, Vt.; a grandson and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held in May. Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
