Robert E. Kraus, 91, Of Stamford, World War II Veteran

STAMFORD, Conn. - Robert E. Kraus of Stamford died Monday, May 26. He was 91.

Kraus was born May 3, 1923, City Island, N.Y., to Louis Joseph and Hilda Tillinghast Kraus. He graduated from Fordham University and obtained his master's degree from CCNY.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1945, where he was a mechanic, a tail gunner and a flight instructor. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, where he served in the artillery unit as a platoon leader, training his battalion.

After serving in the Army, he took courses for doctoral in psychology. His teaching career started in Pound Ridge, N.Y., as a primary school teacher, then he went on to the Bedford School District. He was a school psychologist in the Larchmont School system and a principal at Mamaroneck Avenue School, where he also started a special education program. He worked for Pan Am, when airplanes landed on the water and would pilot the planes to dock.

From 1980 to 1996, he was a religious education director with his wife Betty at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Stamford. He served on the Stamford Republican Town Committee and went on to serve on the Personnel Board.

Kraus is survived by his sons, Michael J. Kraus of Stamford and Timothy P. Kraus (Karen McKinney) of Bedford Hills, N.Y.; He was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Elizabeth Cassidy Kraus.

Calling hours are Friday, June 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory,104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.  A procession will leave the funeral home Saturday, June 7, at 9:30 a.m. for St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Pelham Cemetery, City Island, N.Y.
