STAMFORD, Conn. - Richard W. Haggerty, Jr. of Stamford died Monday, Nov. 18. He was 83.

Haggerty was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., to Richard W. and May Mahar Haggerty, Sr. He started his own business in 1956, R.W Haggerty Pool of Stamford. He was a long time sponsor of Stamford Youth Hockey, North Stamford Little League, Stamford Senior Babe Ruth and many other youth organizations. He also served as VP of 16 to 18, Babe Ruth Baseball and was a former member of Tamarack Country Club. He played for the Burtenwood Air Force Baseball team while serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War in the European Professional League. He was a baseball player for the Stamford Advocate Baseball Team and Stamford High School Championship Teams, and played professional baseball for the Cleveland Indians, Boston and Milwaukee Braves.

Haggerty is survived by his wife, Emily Ruggiero Haggerty of Stamford; children, Karen Maki of Stamford, Richard “Mick” Haggerty (Susan) of Danbury, Robert “Bobby” Haggerty (Barbara) of Stamford, Bonnie Leister (Jeff) of Michigan, Roger Haggerty (Kathy) of Stamford; 12 grandchildren; and sister, Marion Santo. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Jean Wilder.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. A funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 from the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at St. John’s Mausoleum, Darien.
