Retired Stamford Fire Department Captain Salvatore Salatino Dies

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Retired Fire Capt. Salvatore Salatino, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died April 5 at Stamford Hospital, according to an obituary on the Stamford Fire Department's website. He was 89.

Salatino was born Sept. 6 1926, to Salvatore and Mary (Letizio) Salatino.

He grew up in Stamford and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He was awarded the American Theater, Victory, and European medals for his service. 

Upon his discharge, Salatino returned to Stamford and later joined the Stamford Fire Department. He was dedicated to the department, retiring in 1987 at the rank of captain after 31 years of service.

Salatino is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Lionetti) Salatino; children, Cheryl Salatino, of Sudbury, Mass., and Kevin Salatino, of Pasadena, Calif; step-sisters, Anna Lind and Virginia Molinaro, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Salatino's brothers, Ralph and Michael Salatino, a sister, Theresa Piacenza, and his step-father, Joseph Ciuffo, predecease him.

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Ave., Stamford. Entombment will follow and will be in private.
