STAMFORD, Conn. – Louis Persico Sr. of Stamford died Aug. 26 at Greenwich Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 84. 

He was born Oct. 31, 1927, to Italian immigrants Mary Russo and Arthur Persico of Darien. He graduated from Darien High School in 1945. Known as Lou, Persico was a decorated soldier in the Army and Navy. 

As a civilian, he worked as grocery manager for several years. He took pride in tending to his enormous vegetable garden and lawn, his family said, and happily shared his fresh vegetables with friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family and walking at Cove Island and was a past member of the Piedmont Club. 

Persico loved sports, including football, basketball and golf. He especially enjoyed watching the New York Giants, San Francisco Giants, PGA golf as well as Notre Dame and UConn teams. 

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Church in Darien. Burial with military honors will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
