Lorraine Martin, 84, of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Lorraine Levesque Martin of Stamford died June 6 at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness. She was 84.

Martin was born June 21, 1927, in Salem, Mass. At the age of 18, she toured with the USO, dancing in New England during World War II. Martin then worked as a telephone operator for Bell System before getting married.

In 1948, she married Joseph P. Martin, her high school sweetheart. She worked at Gimbels in Stamford from 1972 until her retirement in 1992 from other stores.

Murphy loved her home, family and garden. Martin was also proud of her French-Canadian heritage. Descended from one of Quebec's first families, she spent considerable time researching her family's genealogy.

She is survived by two children, Michele Martin Dougherty and husband Mark of Nahant, Mass., and Joseph Martin Jr. and wife Mary Karen Brawn of Wildwood, Mo.; a brother, Gerard Levesque and wife Claire of Salem; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stamford Hospital Building Fund.
