Joseph George Gostomski, Jr., 91, Retired Stamford Post Office Employee

STAMFORD, Conn. - Joseph George Gostomski, Jr. of Stamford died Monday, May 12. He was 91.

Gostomski was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Stamford, to Rose and Joseph Gostomski, Sr. After graduating from Stamford High School in 1940, he served from 1941 to 1944 in the United States Army Medical Corp assigned to the 4th Air Force. He was discharged as medical sergeant. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 58 years where he served as grand knight, past faithful navigator as a member of the 4th Degree Honor Guard, and a lifetime member of the 3rd Degree Knights. In addition to volunteering at St. Camillus Care and Rehabilitation Center in Stamford, he served as past president of Saint Mary’s Church Seniors, and was an honorary member of Holy Name Athletic Club.

He served as financial secretary for the Conde Nast Maintenance Union where he was employed. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Stamford Post Office Credit Union. He worked at the Stamford Post Office for 23 years before his retirement. After retiring, he was employed in the mailroom by Olin Corporation.

Gostomski is survived by his sons, Barry and Michael; daughter, Betty Bernstein; six grandchildren; and sister, Gloria Kupidlowski. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Janet Miller Gostomski; and brother, Eugene. Calling hours are Friday, May 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home Saturday, May 17 at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace RC Cemetery, Rock Rimmon Road, Stamford.
