STAMFORD, Conn. – Joseph P. Ezzo Sr. of Stamford died Oct. 18 at Stamford Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 73.
He was born Oct. 4, 1939, in Norwalk to Angelo and Rose Marino Ezzo. "Popeye," as he was known by many, served as a volunteer firefighter with the Glenbrook Fire Department in Stamford for 53 years as an engine captain.
Ezzo was also sexton at St. Maurice Church for nine years. He was active in the church choir, the social activity committee and the social concerns committee. He was a 2008 recipient of the St. Augustine Medal.
He worked as a mason with Local 1 Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman for more than 50 years before his retirement. An avid fisherman and bowler, Ezzo enjoyed playing horseshoes and making "pizza fritta" for his family and friends.
Ezzo is survived by his wife, Diane M. Camurati Ezzo, of Stamford; five children, Carl J. (Leslie) Ezzo, of Shelton, Lisa A. Ezzo-Schultz, of New York, and Gina M. Ezzo, and her fiance, Phil Mancini, Joseph P. Ezzo Jr., and Kevin M. (Josephine) Ezzo, all of Stamford; a close nephew, Christopher N. (Lisa) Chirco, of Brookfield, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Angelo, Emil and Vincent "Chico" Ezzo; and six sisters, Fran Sylvester, Mary Voorhees, Lillian Fernino, Ruth DiCostanzo, Theresa "Tessie" Greco and Rose LaPlante.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory in Stamford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Maurice Church in Stamford. Interment will be private.
