John Allison, 93, Longtime Stamford Resident

AUSTIN, Texas. - John Allison, a long time resident of Stamford, died Friday, July 26. He was 93.

Allison was born Feb. 25, 1921, in Saltcoats, Scotland, son of Elizabeth Erskine Allison and William L. Allison. A graduate of Stamford High School, he attended Columbia University and the New York Tax Institute. He was employed by Conde Nast Publications and worked in their Financial Division for almost 55 years. He was appointed corporate controller in 1969 and executive director of Corporate Resources in 1989.

Allison served with the Air Force, during World War II, first as a weather forecaster, and then in the Inspector General's section. He was awarded Legion of Merit for his service in China. After four and a half years of regular service, he spent 16 years in the reserve, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. He was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.

He was chairman of the Urban Renewal Commission and was chairman of the United Fund Budget Committee. He was chairman of Catholic Charities and chairman of the Girl Scout Camp Francis Committee. He was a founding member and a trustee of St. Leo Catholic Church. He assisted St. Mary's and Holy Spirit Church with their financial affairs. He was a member of the Senior Men's Association of Stamford and the Civil War Round Table. He was involved in the financial field as president of the Fairfield area of the Financial Executives Institute.

Allison is survived by three children: Bonnie Allison Mehok (Don), Richard Allison, and John Allison Jr. (Judith Kennedy); six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Perry.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5 at St. Leo Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. Interment with military honors will be at St. John Cemetery.
