Janet Rinaldi Pia, 89, Of Stamford, Retired Secretary, Board Of Education

STAMFORD, Conn. - Janet Rinaldi Pia of Stamford died Aug. 14. She was 89.

Pia was born March 14, 1924, in Stamford, to Charles and Bessie Hawthorne Rinaldi. At three years old, they moved to Darien and she attended Baker School and Darien middle school until 9th grade when they moved to Stamford. She graduated from Stamford High School, class of 1942, and Short’s Secretarial School. She was employed at Jarumaha & Co. as secretary for 20 years, then owned a letter shop, Janna Mimeographing, for eight years; later she was employed as administrative assistant to the Stamford Education Association for 18 years. She worked as secretary for the Board of Education serving at Westover, Stark and Newfield Schools until her retirement in 1998. She served with the Civil Defense during the World II War.

She was president of the Northrop Little League Auxiliary and president of the Belltown Babe Ruth Baseball Auxiliary. She served, and was still serving at St. Maurice Church in many capacities, including 10 years on the Parish Council, and served as chairman for three years, Finance Committee, Liturgy Committee, etc. She taught CCD for 14 years, and later served as DRE for five years. She was a eucharist minister and coordinator for the eucharist ministers/lectors schedule.

Pia is survived by her sons, Jerry (Teddi), Tommy, Charles and his fiancée, Stephanie, and David (Lori); seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and foster brother, Richard Anderson. She was predeceased by her parents.

Calling hours are Sunday, Aug. 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lacerenza Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19 at St. Clement's Church, 535 Fairfield Ave., Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
