Helen Kapitan, 90, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Helen Kapitan, 90, of Stamford, died peacefully  July 1, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

She was born Feb. 26, 1925, to the late Joseph and Julia Hornyak.

Kapitan worked at KT Murphy School for many years until her retirement.

She will  be remembered for her amazing spirit, her love for growing and caring for her huge vegetable garden every year and her passion for fishing, crabbing and clamming.

Kapitan is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Frank Kapitan, and a sister, Elsie "Bunny" Parsons. She also is survived by her grandson, Shawn M. Kapitan Sr., his wife Nicole, and three great grandchildren, Shawn M. Kapitan Jr., Ryan Kapitan, and Gracie Kapitan along with four nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by her son Ronald F. Kapitan and daughter Joyce L. Kapitan. She also was predeceased by three sisters, Matilda Hornyak, Ethel MacLellan and Margaret "Midge" Pike, as well as two brothers, Lewis Hornyak, and Joseph Hornyak Jr.

The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses and staff of the Regency Heights of Stamford for the loving care they provided her throughout the years.

Family and friends are invited to attend a service to celebrate her life at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18 at the First Presbyterian Church (the "Fish" Church), 1101 Bedford St., Stamford.
