Granito was born April 11, 1933, in Manhattan, daughter of Peter and Kitty Altieri of Dumont, New Jersey, and spent her grammar school years in the Clason Point area of the Bronx. She attended St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey and Montclair State Teachers College in Montclair, N.J. After her graduation in 1955 she joined the faculty of Hackensack High School, teaching English. She moved to Stamford with her family in 1992.
Granito is survived by her children, Catherine and Tim Langan, Frank and Monica, Nora and Dan Harris and John and Luci; 16 grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Sharon), Jimmy (Geri) and John (Kathleen) Altieri; sisters-in-law, Nora (Cass) Chomicz, Eileen (Andy) Simons and Sheila (Don) Dunphy; and brother-in-law, Gennaro (Maureen) Granito; many nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Frank H. Granito Jr. "Ditto"; brothers, Tommy and Peter Altieri; sister-in-law, Meg Granito; and brother-in-law, John Teeple.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5 at St. Vincent's Church 26 Green Village Road, Madison, N.J. Burial will be followed at St. Vincent of Martyr Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betty and Frank Granito Scholarship Fund at Cardinal Hayes High School, 650 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York 10451.
